Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a Difference Maker

(Free-Press-Release.com) August 11, 2009 -- Known for being a Kennedy, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was also a pioneer when it came to making a difference for others. When society was shunning the disabled, Shriver and her mentally retarded sister Rosemary, changed the way we see people with disabilities. The idea of having more than one disabled person in a public location, let alone in a summer camp, was unthinkable in the 1960s. This one action, however, is what makes the Special Olympics and people with disabilities a welcome part of our communities today.

"Eunice was ahead of her time," explains David Justus, author of The Lemonade Stand: How to Make a Difference 101. "She saw a situation that was not right and stood up and made a difference."

In his book, Justus uses Shriver and the Special Olympics as an example of people that use certain ingredients he has identified as a way to make a difference for others. "Eunice had what anyone wanting to make a difference needs; passion for a cause, empathy for others, a mission, network and willingness to take action."

The Special Olympics is one idea that has made a significant difference for thousands of people over the last 40+ years. Participants and volunteers alike have found wonderful benefits from being a part of the activities.

And we agree as we regret the passing of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, but are grateful for the difference she has made for people with disabilities.
