Every Earth Day event in San Diego is bigger than the year before. We attended on a sunny day and on days like this I like to bring a parasol - a reminder that solar power should flood every home, school and company in our state, there is no excuse not to go solar in California. As we enter, there is a booth set up outside giving away free CDs about the truth behind 9/11. Once inside, booths overflow with ornamental succulents and rows of solar power companies. For the newcomer, this variety can be confusing and ultimately a final decision rests on a blend of price and effective management. Although we brought home a re-usable bag of fliers from different companies, we may follow our neighbor's suggestion (they pay $2/month for electricity in their family home) and hire a company that asks for very low up front fees and monthly payments that match our current electricity bill.
These payments go towards eventual purchase of the panels. Some of these companies include:
Sun Run http://www.sunrunhome.com/,
1 Block off the Grid http://1bog.org/,
and Natural Energy Http://www.naturalenergyusa.com/

Earth Fair posted some signs warning of "extremists" in front of some obnoxious anti-choice (meaning anti-preserve-the-planet-for-future-generations) groups who paraded revolting photos during our age of global over-population and human exploitation of the environment. Despite this interruption of the otherwise healthy and positive atmosphere, the Fair was informative and rewarding. It was good to see burgeoning water company Nika, whose proceeds go to water projects in Africa, and it is always encouraging to see Greenpeace who are doing so much to combat the exhaustion of the oceans. Some of my favorite Earth Fair gadgets included a backpack with solar panels to recharge cell phones while traveling or hiking. Owning a solar powered battery charger is one of those things that just feels good, like putting deposits in a savings account. There were some portable water filters that could come in handy in disaster areas or anywhere that no fresh water is available.

It was surprising to find that among the many food stands at the event, none offered organic food. There were stands with caramel covered apples, hot dogs, frozen yogurt, ice cream, lemonade. Earth Day with no organic food available is a contradiction. San Diego certainly offers mobile organic food vendors, one simply has to drop into the local farmers markets and the products are there. While it is important for Earth Day to ideally see profits from holding the event, it is important for the organizers to be leaders and set a good example, showing other trade fairs that making organic food available is easy, sensible, healthy, and the responsible thing to do. It would be nice if the Fair would last a weekend instead of one day. As we all know: Every Day Should be Earth Day, All Around the World.
