Experts raise concern about growing menace of Diabetes in children

Chandigarh, November 15, 2010, Specttrum News: On the World Diabetes Day incidentally falling on the Children’s day this year, the need for wide spread awareness about improvement in child health care in the country was the prime topic of discussion.
Proper child health care in India is still a lasting dream. Even though a lot of research and advancement has taken place in the medical and social fields about healthcare but the ignorance about Child Health Care is still a cause of worry in the country, added renowned gynaecologist and infertility expert Dr. (Mrs.) Sandeep Cheema Sohi, Director-Reviva Clinic, Chandigarh.
Considering the seriousness of the issue the Department of Non-Communicable Diseases, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India in association with several other organizations had organized a national conference called “Child Health Congress 2010” on Children’s Day, November 14. The supporting organizations included HEAL, Vision Mission Foundation, and Project HOPE. The congress plans to have a pre-diabetes identification programme in place wherein they plan to screen at least 1 lakh people for diabetes beginning Nov 14.The growing incidence of lifestyle illnesses like diabetes in children has been worrying health planners in the country of late. The need for strategies to counter this menace has been intensely felt for quite sometime and it is expected that during the course of deliberations some pragmatic solutions may emerge.
The event especially raised issues about juvenile diabetes. With India having the highest number of diabetic patient in the world of around 45 million, the number is expected to rise to 69.9 million by 2025. Dr. Sohi emphasized the need of Pre-natal and post delivery precautions to be taken for the proper development of the child. She particularly highlighted the requirement of proper diet and care of the pregnant women for proper development of the foetus. Talking on juvenile diabetes and other congenital diseases she added that many of these problems in children may be cured if diagnosed timely and proper treatment is administered.
Dr. Manika Khanna, IVF and Infertility specialist who was in city to raise the awareness about Child Health Care emphasized the need for change in people’s attitude and behaviour towards child health & wellness. She added that the child health care scenario in India presents a depressingly gloomy picture. Child health apparently figures low on our agenda despite the high-decibel assertions that children are the cornerstone of the country’s future.
