Exploding myths - Isis and Osiris

The ancient culture of Egypt is redolent with magic and mythology enthralling generations. Who doesn’t know, for instance, the story of Osiris and Isis and their glorious journey? Lovers of folklore have thrilled with indignation on learning about Seth’s deception on being invited to his brother’s, Osiris’ banquet. The deception involved introducing a beautiful coffin fitted to the size of Osiris. Unwittingly, the latter entered the coffin which was quickly discarded in the Nile. A mournful Isis looking high and low for her husband ended up in Byblos. Several adventures and mishaps later, during which the evil Seth rediscovered the coffin with the sleeping Osiris in it, Osiris was dismembered and in a goring display of vengeance pieces of his corpse were splayed all over the land. It was left to poor Isis to pick up the pieces yet again to form the first Egyptian mummy.

Resuscitating the mummy she was able to conceive Horus. Osiris went on to rule, what is called, the Land of the Dead as its king. Horus, his son, vanquished his evil uncle Seth in battle and reigned supreme. Known, initially, as the god of war, Horus is also believed to have reincarnated several times as a pharaoh.

The tale weaves such splendor and magic, doesn’t it? Described as the ‘God of Love’, Osiris also represents hope, fertility and regeneration. Isis is said to be the patron saint of women, children and mothers. Their potent combination created some exciting myths that persist to this day.
