FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) July 14, 2011 -- It’s inhabited and has the country’s only statutory Marine Nature Reserve. The 400 high granite outcrop that seems to act as a referee between the Bristol Channel and the Atlantic may not be the best known tourist destination in the UK but Lundy Island conjures up a very enjoyable day out for holidaymakers staying just 11 miles away on the North coast of Devon and Cornwall.

Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel measuring about 3 miles (5 km) by 0.75 miles (1.2 km) at its widest Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England.

We were staying at the very cosy, family-run Camelot Hotel close to the border of both counties at a seaside town called Bude. From here it is only a short journey to Bideford where one can embark upon the M S Oldenburg, the remarkably spacious and comfortable passenger ferry that carries over 250 locals and visitors on the 2 hour crossing to the island between March and October.

On some days, the vessel departs from another harbour at Ilfracombe but, either way, passengers are afforded magnificent views of the Devon coastline rising up to the heights of Exmoor.

On arrival at Lundy, visitors get several hours in which to explore the island which is only 3 miles long and half a mile wide with far-reaching vistas across to Cornwall and South Wales. There is a wonderful variety of seabirds to admire and also a fair chance of spotting some seals at some point during your stay. Most visitors interrupt their stroll along the spine of the island with a lunchtime pit stop at the Marisco Tavern, Lundy’s only pub, which is conveniently situated right at the centre of the island. The Post Office also does a roaring trade in official Lundy Island stamps.

At the end of an invigorating day it’s time to sail back to Bideford to catch the high tide in the early evening and reflect on a hugely different and highly enjoyable day out.
