This New Year’s Day, St. Pete Boot Camp drill sergeants will confiscate dangerous weight-loss contraband and wage a war against meaningless measures of fitness.
“Scales are the enemy,” says St. Pete Boot Camp founder Damon Reio. “They convince people that the goal is to lose ten, twenty, fifty pounds. Total health is so much more. You might be the ‘perfect’ weight but not fit. On the flip side, you could weigh more than you think you should and still be in outstanding shape.”
A study at the University of Hertfordshire U.K. found that nearly eight out of ten people will fail at their New Year’s
Resolutions. According to the research, most that fail at weight loss do so because they focus on the downside of not achieving that perfect number on the scale; try to suppress their cravings; fantasize about being successful; or rely on willpower alone.
Your best bet for success is to plan a series of smaller fitness goals. Get a baseline measurement of your overall fitness, which includes strength, flexibility, balance and endurance, then gradually improve all four.
“The idea is to create a series of wins to keep you motivated,” says Reio. “Try to increase the number of sit ups you can do or how long you can hold your body in plank position. Forget about weighing yourself every day. You could probably put your scale to better use doing arm curls and overhead presses with it.”
Reio is offering recruits the chance to do just that:
