FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) April 7, 2010 --
One thing that becomes clear when you look at all the innovative (and strangely named) new social networking services being launched all the time – Brizzly, Quora, Staqler – is that they need to battle it out amongst themselves and find out who gets to exist long term. But if you are anxious to try them all out to decide for yourself, there is a way you can do it without having to sign up for each service individually. You can use Facebook Connect instead. Once you have a sign-in on Facebook Connect, getting in on all the budding websites becomes automatic on all participating networks. While this works very well for now, to some startups that see themselves as trying to stand up against the establishment (that Facebook seems to have become in no time at all),it might be a difficult compromise to accept. Remember how in the Falklands wars, Argentina tried to use its French-made Exocet missiles against Britain, only to find that France, being Britain's friend and neighbour, wouldn't give them the materials and training they needed to operate them? That's how these new startups feel now. If they hand their membership rosters to Facebook to handle, will they be permanently dependent on them for life, and be kept under and in check by Facebook forever?
What makes it even harder is, that compromising your independence as a social network and getting on Facebook Connect is no guarantee of success either. Some startups succeed, while others fail. Still, Facebook Connect has helped dozens of new social services by giving them access to its nearly half-billion users.
Sites like Aardvark, Quora and Blippy are finding a great deal of success, starting on day one with millions of users from Facebook. Blippy's social networking idea is particularly interesting. Their idea is that people need an outlet to talk about stuff they buy online; and powered by Facebook Connect with its millions of users, they're seeing a good deal of success right away. Or consider the music service LoKast whose model is that that members choose to share songs and tracks using their cell phones? It wouldn't be here without Facebook's databases.
It gives them a better chance at attracting advertisers too. When the advertisers know all the personal details of the Facebook members on the new social site, what stops them from targeting their advertising at the members on the new service those members belong to? The best part is that, Facebook has no real screening process, for which social networks gets to use Facebook Connect. Every startup is welcome.
