Falls from Cribs can Cause Deaths or Injuries

As a result, parents usually leave their babies unattended when they are sleeping or playing in their crib. However, many parents are unaware that cribs and playpens can also be a dangerous place for their babies.

Based on the study conducted by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, from 1990 to 2008 around 181,654 children under the age of 2 in the United States were taken to emergency rooms for injuries related to cribs, playpens and bassinets. It appeared that many of these cases result to injuries to the head, neck or face.

Only 94% of the children admitted to emergency rooms were released. A total number of 2,140 died as a result of the injuries.

According to Dr. Gary A. Smith, a professor of pediatrics and director of the hospital's Center for Injury Research and Policy, parents should be very cautious when they leave their children inside the crib and that there should be somebody who will watch over the baby. When the baby can already stand up on his own the parents should lower the height of the mattress in the crib so there is at least 26 inches between the top of the mattress and the top of the rail. Smith added that when the child reaches about 35 inches in height, the parents should remove the crib and start using a toddler bad for their child.

Child falls are the most common injuries associated with cribs. It is also the easiest injuries to prevent. Falls from cribs are preventable if the parents will take the necessary precaution.
