Tom Gallo and Susan Devitt, married duo and founders of GalloLea Organics created the company when Gallo was laid off from his job as a ceramic engineer and Devitt, a graphic designer, lost a major account during the economic downturn. That something turned out to be through Gallo’s talent for making tasty “gravy” and homemade pizza. Rather than start a restaurant as friends and neighbors urged, the couple decided to create a pizza kit.

While it is fairly simple to create a pizza crust with white flour, Gallo and Devitt’s decision to make a healthy, organic whole-wheat pie took a year in the kitchen to perfect. The sauce that Gallo’s friends raved about was his grandmother’s “gravy” recipe he grew up with and which he tweaked to make it his own.
