Fantasy Novelist Wendy Raven McNair Debuts Her New African American Tale, ASLEEP, at Borders Book Signing

September 29, 2009

A new novel featuring African American teens as the main characters joins the popular fantasy genre.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 29, 2009 -- Fantasy novelist Wendy Raven McNair’s Borders book signing is significant due to the limited availability of fantasy stories portraying African Americans as the main characters. McNair’s new novel, ASLEEP, is a suspenseful tale of super beings which chronicles the experiences of an engaging group of teens.

“I was inspired to write ASLEEP when I couldn’t find fantasy novels for my teen, containing main characters who reflect her, an African American natural girl. As readers, we purchase a variety of genres, including books like Harry Potter and Twilight, and I found the lack of diversity frustrating. This inspired me to write a story, celebrating diversity, which can be enjoyed by the whole family, teens as well as adults.” – McNair

The lack of variety in African American titles has been a long standing complaint of many readers. The street lit, erotica, and poetry domination in African American literature is similar to the Hip Hop, Rap, and R&B domination in the music world. This lack of variety is due in large part to the limited selections traditional disseminators of African American titles choose to produce which severely decreases the availability of varied works by and about African Americans.

There is an audience for a broader range of relatable African American titles. This is evidenced in part by the reception and glowing reviews of the fantasy novel, ASLEEP:

“…the book was captivating right from the start… It was reminiscent of the Heroes TV show and Twilight series, however ASLEEP comes across as a little more down to earth with much deeper character development. Humor and suspense abound on every page, keeping the reader interested and constantly wondering what’s going to happen next. A real treat.” – Leslie

“Your book was fantastic – I love the characters, the way they are developed and how the story moves along. It is the right balance of all the things that make a book worth reading.” – Nathalie

“Excellent book - you have to let me know when the second one is out... very well written - captivating - suspenseful... – I couldn’t put it down. -- You definitely have a hit on your hands and I'm going to purchase the trilogy. Congrats to you for an awesome job!” – Bernette
