Fashion Design: Maike Thoma talks about technological advances

"Until the late 90s Fashion design was mostly synonymous with using pen/stylus and paper to create style sheets. At best the designer could use the Xerox machine to create multiple basic style sheets that were then customized by hand." stated Maike Thoma, a professional fashion designer for almost two decades. She continued: "If the style sheets ha to be presented to several departments it also meant lots of hours in fornt of the color copier." Maike Thoma began using design software by Adobe "in the 90s, however at that point the promise of the software could not catch up with reality of every day use yet. Computer hardware was not fats enough and software features were quite limited then." remembers Mrs. Thoma. All this has changed. Even low cost computers are lightning fast and Adobe has loaded its software to the brim when it comes to design features. "Once you have created a template library, you can literally pump out individual style sheets as if they were coming off a conveyor belt", Maike Thoma reports. She continued: "The one activity I still prefer to do manually is color selection using an old fashioned Pantone fan. While there are standardizing utilities for computers, each screen represents the chosen color a little different. And since everyone has email there is no longer any need to print out/duplicate every style and courier it around the world for multiple departments to share and collaborate.
