Brett Favre, now playing for the Minnesota Vikings, celebrated his NFL record 271st consecutive regular season start on Sunday in a 27-13 win over the Detroit Lions. Favre officially set the record when he took his first snap and handed off to running back Adrian Peterson.
Erick Rolfson of letterstobrettfavre.com cites Favre's durability and longevity as primary reasons the three-time league MVP is still respected and admired by so many fans.
“Brett Favre’s 271 consecutive starts qualify him as a true iron man," Rolfson said in an interview shortly after the game. "Of course there will be naysayers, but the bottom line is that hit after hit, this man of true inspiration marches forward, now with a new team and a chance to win... and win the Vikings will."
Rolfson is best known for founding the "Bring Back Brett Favre" fan movement, which garnered national media attention in the summer of 2008. However, Rolfson has since teamed with his brother Adam and Wisconsin author Thomas Hapka to create "Letters To Brett Favre: A Fan Tribute" - an unprecedented tribute to Favre and his fans.
The previous record for consecutive starts was held by defensive end Jim Marshall, who started in 270 consecutive games for Minnesota from 1961-1979.
