FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) March 9, 2010 --My name is Tina Carter and I am the San Diego Area Director for Pets of the Homeless. This is a volunteer postion which is headed up by Pets of the Homeless in Nevada. Since 2008, 190 collection sites across the country have collected over 92,000 lbs. of pet food plus beds, collars, leashes, cat litter, flea treatments, and grooming supplies that equate to over $143,000. (Many sites do not report their collections). Our collection sites take the donated pet food and supplies to 107 different organizations that have agreed to distribute the pet food to the homeless and poor. Some of our member sites take the pet food directly to the homeless on the streets. This is something I have been doing since the middle of last year and have seen an increase in the number of homeless with pets. I also recently started a facebook page titled Feeding Pets of the Homeless. To date there are more than 6000 fans who post comments, share stories and talk openly about the growing concern and need of owners and their pets.

It is estimated by the National Coalition for the Homeless that 3.5 million people are homeless. Between 5% - 10% of homeless people have dogs and/or cats. In some areas of the country the rate is as high as 24%. Most people who experience homelessness (80%) are homeless for a short period of time and usually need help finding housing or a rent subsidy. But unfortunately for those with pets it becomes more difficult forcing the needy to choose between their pet and a roof over their head. Surprisingly, most choose to stay on the streets with their pets for longer periods of time. Their pets are their comfort, provide an emotional bond of loyalty and are nonjudgmental. It is estimated that one in four homeless and disadvantaged people have a pet. Pets of the homeless do not choose their guardians.

Pets of the Homeless recently announced that they are initiating a new grant program to homeless shelters. The goal is to spread awareness of the lack of accommodations for homeless with pets and to provide crates or kennels to homeless shelters. We are prepared to offer nonprofit homeless shelters grants to supply and ship collapsible sleeping compartments for pets of the homeless to comfortably sleep in a confined space next to their owner, as well as feeding bowls and cleaning supplies.
