Feeling Insecure? Check Your Wireless Connection

From the boardroom to the cubicle, wireless connectivity has made life a little easier for people who rely on technology to do their job.

But what you may not realize is that your wireless network could leave your business open to security breaches because most wireless access points have security settings disabled by default. To prevent unwanted users from connecting to your network and potentially hacking your data, follow these three tips from Microsoft:

1. Assume you already have a problem. The average company loses hundred of dollars a year due to security breaches. Don’t let an insecure wireless Internet connections betray your trade secrets or other confidential information.

2. Get a security policy in place. This policy should include quality passwords. The book “Perfect Password: Selection, Protection, Authentication” states that 50% of passwords are based on users’ family members, partners, spouses, or pets. These passwords are easily hacked. Instead, passwords should be a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols, and they should be changed regularly.
