Detroit Public Library could close most of its neighborhood branches and lay off more than half of its workers as it faces an $11 million budget shortfall.
The Detroit News reports Friday that officials say deeper cuts are needed and they have three options. One is to shut 18 of 23 branches and lay off 191 of the library system's 333 workers. Two is to shut down 15 branches and lay off 163 workers.Or three close 12 branches and lay off 135 workers. In addition to 80 recent layoffs.
The library system largely is funded through a tax that's based on property values, which have declined. The tax that generated $40 million in 2010 is expected to produce only $14 million by 2015.
