Today cities and towns all over the Chicago area offer either Polar Express or Santa train trips for children. You’ll find over forty trips listed in the web directory, Santa in Chicago.com http://www.santainchicago.com/santaonthetrain/santaandtrains.htm.

These trips are available through park districts, the Illinois Railway Museum, the Chicago Transit Authority, the Fox River Trolly Museum city and town park districts and more. The trips have become so popular that they almost always sell out, often within a day or two of being offered.

The CTA Holiday Train is a local favorite for children of all ages. There is a real sense of excitement when the train which is all lit up with thousands of colorful lights, and Santa Claus riding right out in the open on a flatcar comes roaring down the tracks. You’ll find it on different CTA lines in Chicago, through Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010.

Some of the trips are not real train rides, they are on on trollys, which are old street cars on tracks. You’ll also find motorized trollys offering “Polar Express” trips and then there is an outing on a miniature stream train.

The majority of the events are on area Metra trains. On these trips the children are usually told they are going to take a ride on a train to the North Pole. During the train ride to the station that is the North Pole, some one will read the story of the “Polar Express” and the kids are usually served cookies and other treats.

When the train reaches the station designated as the North Pole the children are met by Santa Claus, who greets everyone and returns with them on the train ride back home. On the return trip it’s likely there will be singing of holiday songs, pictures with Santa and more treats for the little ones.
