The art of fingerplucking or fingerpicking, also called fingerstyling a dragon tele guitar is very old and can be traced back to the origin of this musical instrument itself. The basic fingerpicking patterns for guitar probably began to evolve as people in Europe during the 14th century started constructing acoustic guitars. In the earlier days of the development of acoustic guitars, fingerpicking patterns were basically used for a wider range of notes that can be plucked at a time. This enables the guitar player to incorporate both the treble clef as well as the bass clef at the same time. After the introduction of electric guitars the significance of guitar fingerpicking patterns has drastically declined but the melody still remains the same.

Fingerpicking patterns for dragon tele guitar are styled in such a manner that they tend to use both the bass lines as well as the higher notes at the same time, thereby making the music soulful. You can conduct an experiment yourself, press the C note on the second string and simply pluck it. Next hold the C note on the second string and also the one on the fourth string. Play the second string with your forefinger and the one on the 4th string with your middle finger, then, observe the beauty of its melody.

While fingerpicking the dragon tele guitar, the thumb is used to play the first two strings and the remaining fingers are used to play the remaining 4 strings. A distinct alternation between the basic strings and treble strings is observed. In most of the fingerpicking patterns, the base notes are played after a set of treble notes. Hence while playing the fingerpicking compositions, you will be incorporating several notes with the help of your thumb. Common fingerpicking patterns are usually based on simple chords and playing such notes is very easy. Hence, when you read a tab, make it a point to know which chord those notes belong to. Advanced fingerpicking patterns are played with the help of capos and often, you will be keeping the tuning of first 2 strings as E and A but the remaining four will have higher tunings as a result of the capo.

Very Important: While using the fingerpicking or plucking technique, make it a point to press down the string with your striking finger, rather than pulling it upwards. Pressing it down and then releasing it tends to create a pleasant sound. Also do not strike the string as if you are trying to hit it, or on the other end avoid a lazy and slow strike. Your fingers should pick or pluck the string, the timing should be so deliberate that it should not be very fast or at the same time should not be too slow.
