FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 23, 2010 --Fireside Fuels Coal vs Wood Logs

Logs and timber
Logs and wood are still the preferred choice for most homeowners, they are easy and cheap to come by and most give good heat. Logs provide the ambiance of a traditional wood fire. Additionally, log fire can provide a great deal of heat to a home, while coal is more efficient for simple heating. Log inserts are many times more efficient than standard fireplaces and provide a traditional flame that homeowners are looking to create. If you are using logs or wood you will need to use a log basket, a log carrier for the fireside is ideal for storing the logs.
The most common form of wood fuel at the moment is logs. These are usually available from local sources and can be brought from a variety of outlets – e.g. coal merchants, farmers, tree surgeons. It is important the logs are dry and well seasoned. Burning wet or unseasoned wood is less efficient and can cause harmful build up of deposits in the chimney over a very short time. Thick coatings of creosote or resinous material can cause chimney fires, or prevent the chimney functioning properly and is now illegal. This can allow harmful fumes to escape into the dwelling. Efficient burning is achieved by setting the appliance to burn fast after stoking, try to chop the logs into smaller peices for faster burning i.e more heat. Only set to slow burn when all wood has been reduced to charcoal and ash. Newly added wood set to burn slowly creates smoke and creosote in the chimney. The stove should not be banked up with logs for overnight burning. A bright fire which has turned the wood into charcoal should be left with the day’s ash, no secondary air and minimal primary air.

Coal
Nowadays coal comes in many different forms, if you are in a smokeless area smokeless coal must be used. Anthracite coal is a hard, low-moisture coal that is extremely efficient to burn. It does not make as much smoke as coal stoves in the past did which makes burning them indoors very convenient.
The original coal can sometimes burn very dirty, the soot can block chimneys over time. Burning coal produces sulphur dioxide, an acidic gas that contributes to the formation of acid rain.
Coal scuttlesare needed for loading coal onto the fire some times call coal hod, you could also us coal buckets instead.
When burning coal shut down the top air vent of your stove and use the bottom aur vent to regulate the fire. If this makes the fire die down too much then it sounds like the draw on your chimney is not that good. In this case use the top air vent too and consider contacting us to see how you could improve the draw on your chimney.

Which works better
While the cost of coal is not unreasonable in comparison to many other fuels, often the cost of wood is little or nothing. With a chainsaw and a willingness to exercise a bit, you can offer to cut your neighbor's unwanted tree or gather tree debris after a storm clears. By gathering wood in this manner, the cost of the fuel for log fireplace inserts can be virtually zero.
