New York, NY, July 12, 2010 -- Michelle Obama, first lady and fashion icon, known for championing independent designers, has always dazzled us with her signature, one-of-a-kind jewelry styles. After much speculation as to who designed the beautiful earrings Mrs. Obama wore at the State Arrival Ceremony for Indian Prime Minister Singh Kaur and First Lady Gursharan Kaur, we can now confirm that the designer is Mary Esses. The earrings are from the Oceano collection; inspired by moonlit strolls on the beach, with the ocean illuminated by the celestial glow of the moon and stars above.
The stunning jewels feature sparkling, intense, tangerine-colored oval Madeira citrines surrounded by clusters of diamonds hand-set in 18k white gold. The jewels were a perfect complement to the orange embroidered Isaac Mizrahi ensemble that the first lady wore for the historic event.
In addition to the State Arrival Ceremony, the first lady chose a design by Mary Esses for a private White House event, where President Obama posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor to Sergeant First Class Jared C. Monti. The earrings, from the Oceano collection, feature vivid green tourmalines with white and chocolate diamonds hand-set in 18k white gold.
Mary Esses’ passion for the art of jewelry began in her native Brazil, where she was touched by the multitude of colors, hues and the intricate variety of gemstones available. With her background in painting and ceramics, she brings her very own artisanal quality to every piece she designs, creating stunning masterpieces that are wearable works-of-art.
She combines old-world romantic looks, with sleek, modern details; creating jewelry that is timeless, chic and as distinctive as the stones themselves. No matter the theme or inspiration of each collection, her alluring designs always reflect the exotic beauty and glamour of Brazil – imbued with the delicious warmth of the tropics. Her designs feature precious and semi-precious stones set in 18k gold, with prices ranging from about $4,000 to $40,000 retail. Mary Esses jewelry can be purchased at select retailers.
