While performing a routine WDI termite inspection this weekend we ( A.N.T.T.S = A North Texas Termite Specialist) were looking around a back patio of a slab home and found a termite swarm actively producing flying winged termites which are the reproductive swarm's of the subterranean termite. This is a normal early spring occurrence around the DFW area. Earch spring termite colonies start breaking through walls with little mud pinholes and start to build what are called swarm castles. This is their way of hiding until ready to fly off to land and mate then drop their wings and burrow into the soil to start a new colony. You do not want this to happen near your home but there is not much you can do to prevent them from landing in your yard. You can though protect your home with a preventative termite treatment around the perimeter of your foundation. But first let us tell you ways to inspect you home and maybe you can find existing termite tubes that have gone unnoticed until this point. What you want to do is walk around your foundation and look at where the brick or wood siding is built up from the actual cement foundation. Termites live in the ground or at least the kind we have around here in TX . They will start from the dirt and make a hollow tube going north to your siding and entering your home via any crack 1/32 of an inch or more. They find their way to any wood or product that has cellulose (sugar in wood) like sheet rock etc. I have even seen them eat books! If you come across a point that you cannot visually see the slab foundation while walking around you really need to get low on knees and investigate by moving whatever is blocking your view. Termites love to hide or come up in corners. They are lazy and take the shortest route sometimes. Your wood siding or sheet rock is a free buffet for them so if left untreated around here in Tarrant County or any other county here in Texas they will try to get to it and can do thousands of dollars of damage to your sill plate or walls. We are not trying to scare you but just telling you about the reality of just how bad termites are around here. We inspect hundreds of homes a year for real estate transactions and more than half have either active termites or prior termite damage that has been already treated. I must say if I were in the market to buy a house I would prefer one that is brand new with a pre-treated slab or a older home that has had prior termites but has been treated. When I say treated I mean recently and with Termidor only! Termidor is the professional pest control product we use and it is very good stuff. We have found it to be about 100% effective when used propery and if it has not been disturbed by foundation work or dug up by a homeowner who decided to put a sprinkler system in next to their home.

So now if you do have termites what next ? First of all we always recommend getting at least 3 estimates, we are not afraid of competition we just may do things different than the next company and be priced higher or lower. After we sell a treatment plan we show up at your home and walk you through exactly what we will be doing again. Then we start with the trenching around the perimeter of the home and when we say trench its just enough to hold 4 gallons per linear foot per foot of depth, then we rod the trench with the product. If we come across a slab patio or wood deck we need to drill a 1/2 inch hole to reach just below the slab against the foundation and we stick a rod with a 180 slot that will shoot the chemical close to the foundation under the slab. We then plug all holes that are 12 inches apart and head inside to treat the active area only. The new non-repellent termite products we have allow for this type of spot (interior) treatment and some companies such as the makers of Termidor refer to it as a "Perimeter Plus" . We have found this way to work as well as drilling all plumbing areas and with that much less chemical being put into the environment. After the treatment a good pest control company will leave your property looking better than it was and with very little signs of a treatment except the little sticker we need to place under you sink. A.N.T.T.S offers a 1-3 year warranty and it can always be renewed for a one time low fee. If you would like more info feel free to contact us. Last thing, try not to make it easy for the termites to attack your home! Do not store firewood next to the house or add wood mulch piled so high you cannot see your foundation. Have a safe and happy summer.
