FIRST TIME - INDIAN CONTEMPORARY ART AT GOTHENBURG’S BIGGEST CULTURE FESTIVAL
Welcome visit Our WebSite:
http://www.aakritiartgallery.com The project began as an idea during GENEXT exhibition of Aakriti Art Gallery. Oscar Aschan, was asked to explore the possibilities of starting a collaboration project with Kolkata. Oscar has long been interested in India and its culture, fascinated by the country’s rich history and the burst of development it is currently going through. In this connection Oscar visited India thrice and established contacts with leading cultural personalities and representatives of various institutions. Later, the Deputy Mayor of Gothenburg, Elisabeth Rothenberg visited Kolkata and finalized the cultural exchange programme. This programme is supported by Emami Chisel Art, Aakriti Art Gallery-Kolkata, India with Vasa Konsthal and Gallery Scandinavia in Gothenburg along with Aschan& Co. The Emami Group, The City of Gothenburg and the Culture Ministry of Sweden are the chief patrons of this project in close collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in India.
The exchange programme began with Indian Fashion held at the Elite Park Hotel, Gothenburg on the 8th of May, 2010. Some of the Indian fashion designers who participated in the show were, Wendell Rodricks, , Rahul Mishra and Neelanjana Ghose. The show was choreographed by Prasad Bidappa . This show of Indian fashion was supported by Emami Chisel Art & Aakriti Art Gallery. Head sponsors of the fashion show were, the City of Gothenburg, Västra Götalands Regionen, Aschan & Co. and Volvo buses.
The main aim with the project is to create relationships and personal contacts. These are important everywhere, in all contexts – but nowhere more so than in creative environments! Studies of culture and history show the great significance of relationships, family ties and friendship in our society. The opportunity and ability to establish personal contacts is therefore often the key to successful cultural and business ventures in the world. Culture in the broadest sense – art, music, dance, film, fashion, literature etc. – is held in high esteem in India and Sweden. Leading cultural personalities also enjoy an important position in domestic opinion-making in both countries.
Hence the strategy to build our project around various cultural elements. At the same time that these offer different and exciting experiences for the interested public, they also form a framework within which representatives of businesses, organisations, government agencies and culture can meet on a personal level.
An exhibition of contemporary Indian art will be held at Gothenburg from 10th August till 15th September 2010. The show is jointly curated by Amit Mukhopadhyay and Oscar Aschan.
