A new report from the Florida Center for Nursing has identified the need for 15,000 nurses in the state this year alone, with a growing need for qualified individuals to fill as many as 50,300 LPN jobs and RN jobs by the year 2025. The report cites the aging population and recent healthcare reform legislation as the reason for the growing demand for qualified nurses in the decade to come.
The report states, “If healthcare reform is implemented according to current plans, a shortage of about 5,900 RN full-time equivalents (FTEs) in 2010 will grow to more than 50,300 RN FTEs by 2025. Based on the average proportion of an FTE worked by RNs, this translates into an estimated 56,000 RNs that will be demanded but unavailable for employers in 2025.”
Of specific concern to the report’s authors is retention of the people already holding LPN jobs and RN jobs and expansion of the state’s nursing education capacity. Other issues of concern include:
A 2010 shortage of LPN jobs by 1,261 LPN FTEs could grow to 12,500 LPN FTEs by the year 2025. Facilities expected to feel the greatest impact from this growing shortage of qualified LPNs include home health services, hospices, nursing homes, and other facilities that provide care for a large elderly clientele.
An increasing number of nurses currently holding LPN jobs and RN jobs are approaching retirement age, a certainty that accentuates the shortage of nurses in the training process. This aging population within the nursing profession itself is inevitable and is not influenced in any way by legislative changes to state and federal healthcare policy or economic conditions.
The demand for nurses varies across the United States but the anticipated shortage of nurses in Florida may be felt elsewhere, as the nursing population ages alongside the general public and as healthcare reform policies are adopted across the nation.
