Folkville Ice Cream Reunion

In the early 1980's, Folkville Ice Cream was located at 29th and San Jacinto
growing out of the ashes of You Scream Ice Cream which in turn grew out of the ashes of
Nothing Strikes Back, the psychedelic black-lit ice cream parlour on Guadalupe St.
These venues had something unique in common: ice cream and live music.

Opened in 1981 by Weldon Brewer, a retired 30 year Navy Commander,
Folkville featured three sets of music a night with anyone who wrote songs and sang em.

Weldon dutifully passed the StarWars plastic Stromtrooper helmet after each set to voices like
Townes Van Zandt, Butch Hancock, Pat Mears, Blaze Foley, Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Emily Kaitz,
Michelle Shocked (with her duo Me and Her), Brian Cutean, Bill Oliver, Ky Hote,
The Beacon City Band  and more.

Now after all these years, A Folkville Reunion is planned for 4 pm, Sunday May 15 at Cafe Caffeine,
909 West Mary in South Austin.
It is an all ages afternoon and the line up features only Folkville Alumnus
of many different types and pedigrees. Many folks are still performing and writing and singing 30 years later!

Well, Nanci, Lyle and Butch may not make it even though they are invited
and Townes, Blaze, Calvin Russell, Jerry Housely
and departed others will undoubtedly be there in spirit but the confirmed list looks like a fine mix nonetheless: 

Hear The Therapy Sisters, Bill Oliver, Norm Ballinger, Ky Hote, Gail Lewis, Carolyn Norulak,
Brenda Ladd, Frank Hill, Brian Cutean, Jan Seides, Marilyn Cain,
perhaps a Lounge Lizard or two...
and many others will perform into the evening.
A toast will be offered to Weldon Brewer and, yes, there will be ice cream!
