When someone says I've got the blues, it usually means that he or she is in a bad sourly mood. For coffee aficionados meanwhile, having the blues is having one of the best coffee experiences; having blue mountain coffee that is. Most people might ask why blue mountain coffee beans are so loved and sought-after even with the price tag that accompanies it. There must be more than meets the eye here.
Blue Mountain coffee beans are grown and harvested in the regional mountains of Jamaica in the Caribbean. The production and distribution of these coffee beans are strictly regulated by Jamaica's Coffee Industry Board. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons why the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee beans offer excellent quality. It is to be considered also that the location of its terra firma and the tropical climate of Jamaica which gives a perfect balance of sun, rain and coolness have nurtured its rich regional flavour.
It is interesting to note that in addition to these, Jamaica uses wet processing for its world famous coffee beans. After harvesting the coffee beans, they are immersed in water. This makes sorting easier as bad fruit will float while good ripe beans will sink. The beans are then pulped and washed. The "wet parchment," as how the pulped coffee beans are called after, are then set aside to age for a period of six weeks minimum to dry. These beans are often laid out on patios and large tables and raked several times during the day for even drying and to avoid mildew from growing on the seeds. This drying process allows for a greater consistency as it lets the air circulate around the beans better.
There are a few grades of the blue mountain coffee beans. Most of the beans are produced by small local farmers. Variety exists as each farmer asserts to have his or her own secret process from the plucking, to drying, then curing and finally roasting the Blue Mountain coffee beans.
As per the Coffee Industry Regulations Act, the categories of these coffee beans are specified according to the Blue Mountain coffee bean's size, its appearance plus allowable defects. By peaberry, it means that instead of the two halves that compose a coffee bean, a single round bean is found inside the cherry. It is said that these beans tend to have better flavour and milder taste. The maximum defect range for blue mountain peaberry is at 2% and screen sizes are at 10.
