FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 15, 2009 --
Traverse City, Michigan--Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan announced today that it has collected and distributed over 200,000 pounds of soon-to-expire fresh food and beverages that would have otherwise gone into landfills. These items were picked up from a variety of Food Donors throughout Benzie, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties and distributed to 57 local food pantries, shelters and community meals programs, at no cost, for immediate consumption.
Using the USDA estimate that one pound of food is the equivalent
to one adult meal, Food Rescue has distributed over 200,000 meals since its inception one year ago for approximately $.20 cents per meal. To put this in context, 200,000 pounds of food and beverages will feed 100 families of four, three meals per day, for 167 days!
In addition, they have added a second truck to their fleet, which will enable them to better serve their existing donor base and recipient organizations as well as expand their operation into Antrim and Kalkaska counties. This 24 foot truck was donated to Food Rescue through the generosity of an out-of-state business, who wishes to remain anonymous.
