For crying out loud - strength or weakness depends on the crier

December 31, 2010 Management news in Las Vegas,Nevada, United States of America

As a woman in business, it is generally axiomatic that tears shed in public are considered a sign of weakness regardless of the situation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) December 31, 2010 -- I had the opportunity to observe and gain some invaluable insight from the greatest crier I have ever known when I was legal counsel, V.P. and acting GM of the Philadelphia Eagles—none other than the head coach of the team—Richard Vermeil. Richard makes John Boehner look like a bench warmer. Richard undoubtedly holds the record for the most consistent public display of crying, when dealing with certain football related situations, as well as during his weekly press conference.

What I learned about crying in business from watching Richard Vermeil.

Richard showed an incredible amount of emotion when his hand- picked and personally nurtured football players produced extraordinary athletic achievements as a team. As a leader he was able to get the maximum effort out of his players and his tears were a way for him to express his sheer joy at their success. It was never about Richard it was always about the efforts of the team. His actions were never considered a weakness by the press or the public. I think this example would hold true whether its football or any other business—unless you are a woman.

As a woman in business, it is generally axiomatic that tears shed in public are considered a sign of weakness regardless of the situation. Observing Richard led me to conclude that there is only one way for women to rewrite the business playbook; Own your own damn business.

When I left the Eagles I followed this advice and never looked back.
