San Antonio, TX – June 23, 2011 – The Ballet Conservatory of South Texas (BCSTX) recently partnered with KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Camino Academy in San Antonio to offer complimentary ballet instruction to interested students in order to help enhance their arts education and impart the performing art of ballet into their general acumen.
KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public charter schools that are recognized for their successful approach in educating students from under-resourced communities. BCSTX looks at this opportunity as a way of further educating and exposing, not only under-resourced school students, but also our local community to the arts.
“It is difficult for our public schools to make arts education a priority when they are required to focus their time and money on academic studies”, says Kym Lanier, Director of BCSTX. “KIPP views the arts, ballet in this specific instance, as something that not only will broaden the horizons of their students, but also help them in other areas of their educational growth. Ballet is a great avenue that can help improve discipline, conduct and even memory and problem solving skills when studied. Itʼs an art that basically aids in creating a well-rounded individual.”
Ballet auditions have already taken place to determine studentsʼ dance levels and Dorothyʼs Dance Shop in San Antonio has graciously offered to donate ballet dance wear and shoes to the program. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in BCSTXʼs Academy Showcase of “The Wizard of Oz” in May of 2012.
