One family remembers support from Red Cross of Central Texas and encourages giving before the next disaster hits
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) August 30, 2009 --
Central Texas – September is Disaster Preparedness month and no one knows the importance of preparedness more than survivors of Hurricane Katrina. 4 Years later, Tina Owney still recalls her flight from New Orleans with her husband and two children, “We made it out of the Superdome and over the bridge…we took any bus we could find, we didn’t care where we were going.”
Sadly, Tina’s mom did not escape the disaster. On August 29th, 2005 Bernadine Owney suffered a heart attack and drowned in the murky waters that filled the streets when the levee broke. Her body was found floating and was pulled aside as others fled. It took almost 4 months to have her recovered, indentified, and buried.
Nothing can change the events that took so many lives in Katrina and other disasters. But the Red Cross of Central Texas seeks to respond quickly to catastrophic events and bring needed supplies and support during the crisis and in the aftermath. Owney ended up in Austin where the Red Cross provided her and her family with Wal-Mart cards to buy clothing and helped them find housing in an Extended-Stay Hotel until FEMA could pick up the support.
Dr. Harry Schultze and the Austin Chiropractic Health Center want to help ensure that the Red Cross of Central Texas is well-equipped to respond to disasters like Katrina before they strike. This includes raising funds for much needed supplies for those caught in the calamity and aftermath of such events. The North Austin clinic is holding a fundraising drive during the month of September.
Austin Chiropractic Health Center is encouraging members of the community and existing patients to donate and welcoming NEW PATIENTS to get FULL FIRST DAY SERVICES including Case History, Exam, and X-Rays (if needed ~ a $250 value), in exchange for a donation of $30 minimum; 100% of which will go to the American Red Cross of Central Texas. Catherine Martinez is scheduling appointments for this important donation drive during the month of September 2009 and can be reached at (512)252-3030 or achcInfo@gmail.com.
