The Syrah grape is grown all around the world, and is also known as Sirah, and in Australia and South Africa it is called Shiraz. The Syrah wine is often powerfully flavored and full-bodied, and is used as a varietal and also blended. The intensity may vary considerably, depending on the soil and climate where it is grown. Due to the high tannin content and concentrated flavors, a high quality Syrah will improve with some aging.
The Syrah grape was introduced in California in the early 1900’s and planting accelerated in the 1970’s for use in the Rhone-style blends. In the past fifteen years Syrah plantings have increased significantly, with the most acreage in San Luis Obispo County.

The 2004 Central Coast Syrah from Hug Cellars, is a blend from some of the wine maker’s favorite Syrah vineyards on the Central Coast. This wine exhibits intense blueberry and blackberry, white pepper and lavender. Enjoy now or over the next 12 years. Stephen Tanzer; 88 pts. Robert Parker: 87 pts. Sold out at Hug Cellars. The 2006 Syrah from Calcareous Winery in Paso Robles is an excellent wine. Signature dark fruits such as cherry dominate the bouquet and carry through to the mid palate, with a touch of oak and varietal spice. The finish is soft vanilla with a hint of white pepper. It is perfect on its own or with spicy red meat dishes. $34
The 2005 Cedar Lane Syrah from Hug Cellars is a rare find. This wine tastes of concentrated blackberry and raspberry fruit, along with hints of white pepper and some smokiness. It is well balanced with a lovely long finish. With only 266 cases produced, and rated at 88 points from Stephen Tanzer, it is hard to find. A small inventory still available at Garrett’s Emporium at $34.
The 2006 Phantom Rivers Syrah is a bold wine with flavors of dark plum and currants with hints of coffee and leather. It will pair well with the heartiest of dishes. $24
