FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 15, 2012 -- February 14, 2012 – A substantial increase in the number of Australian employers recruiting international graduates in 2011has been revealed!

According to Australia’s premier graduate jobs directory, Graduate Careers Australia (GCA), international graduates from Australian universities have now a great chance of finding work in Australia in their fields of study.

The new GCA report reveals that there is an increase in the demand for international graduates on Australian work visa in the previous year by Australian employers, with an increase close to levels not seen since the effects of the global financial crisis began to be felt in 2008.

Based on a survey of more than 500 graduate employers, the GCA report reveals that there is a doubling of the proportion of those who recruited international graduates on Australia working visa between 2005 and 2008, peaking at 35%.

According to the GCA report, Graduate Outlook 2011which covered six main fields of employment, the largest increase in the proportion of employers hiring international graduates on Australian skilled visa was from the communication, technology and utilities sector.

The report also showed that there are many employers from accounting and finance; manufacturing; and construction, mining and engineering which also tended to hire more of the graduates in 2011 as compared with the previous two years.

The report corresponds to the changes made by the Australian government on their general skilled migration programme. These changes had made it easier for foreign students on Australian student visa to extend their stay in the country and find work. However, the impact of the financial crisis has caused a drop of nearly 15% in 2009 in the percentage of employers recruiting international graduates, which also remained flat in 2010.

Now, according to the survey of graduate employment outcomes, there are some 30.8 per cent of employers with graduate programs which have taken on international students, as compared to 20.5 per cent in 2009 showing almost a return to the pre-global financial crisis proportion of businesses taking on international graduates on work visa Australia.

Dr. Noel Edge, the GCA Executive Director, commented that the outcomes were encouraging for international students on Australia student visa studying in Australia.

With these positive results, international graduates appear to be facing more employment opportunities, which are also expected to grow into the future.

Likewise, with these positive outcomes, universities across Australia are hoping that these would increase the number of international enrollees as one should note that they have been hard hit financially over the past two years by the rapid downturn in foreign student enrolments, in particular from the two biggest source countries of China and India.

The decline was not only attributed to the changes to Australia’s general skilled migration programme but also to the greater competition from Britain, Canada and the US as well as to the increasing value of the Australian dollar making it far more expensive to travel and study in Australia.

The introduction by the government last July of the new points-based system for the allocation of permanent residence Australian working visa, which have favored offshore Australia skilled visa applications from foreigners with skilled experience rather than onshore working visa Australia applications from international students graduating from Australian universities, have also likely negatively impacted the number of international enrollees, given that one of the powerful factors in the vast increase in the number of foreign students seeking to study in Australia has been the lure of permanent residency.
