Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko Wrongfully Imprisoned

Two days ago Eugenia Carr, daughter of the former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, gave an interview in which she discusses the circumstances surrounding the imprisonment of her mother. The video, which first appeared on democracy4us.org, has rapidly circulated all over the internet, and now appears among Google’s top search results.
In the interview Carr speaks out against the wrongful incarceration of her mother and the flagrant corruption surrounding her trial. In 2010 the Ukrainian General Prosecutor’s Office charged Tymoshenko with abuse of her office, claiming that she misused government funds during her time as Prime Minister. Tymoshenko has alleged that the charges are an act of revenge perpetrated by her political rival, current Prime Minister Yanukovych. During her trial Tymoshenko has refused to stand before the judge and has even insulted him to his face, which lead to her being charged with contempt of court and her arrest. The judge also banned all cameras from the courtroom, leading Tymoshenko to call the judge a “monster” and a “marionette” of Yanukovych, and decry the whole trial as a farce.
In the video interview, Carr calls the proceedings “a complete reversal of justice” and a “return to Soviet ways.” She has accused the judge of ignoring Ukraine’s constitution, an allegation that is hard to argue with since Tymoshenko’s lawyers were given only three days to review over 5000 pages of documents and 147 hours of video entered into evidence, and then were found in contempt and thrown out of the courtroom when they tried to protest. Carr also emphasized the importance of the two documents the judge has refused to allow into evidence, letters that hold the key to proving her mother’s innocence of the abuse of office accusations.
“This is a bad sign for the democracy of Ukraine,” Carr laments. “Every day, the law is being broken.” She says that her mother is the victim of a system determined “to crush any way for freedom, for democracy, for justice.” She expressed disappointment that her attempts to appeal to the judge’s basic humanity and sense of justice fell on deaf ears. When her mother decried the injustice being perpetrated in the courtroom, Carr says the judge just smiled and looked away. Carr goes on to assert that the trial is merely Prime Minister Yanukovych’s attempt to silence his opposition by imprisoning their leader. “It’s obvious that the system is trying to take her out of the political game.”
Carr hopes that her mother’s trial will serve as a warning not just to her people, but other nations as well. “I hope that people can see through this injustice,” Carr says, “because this can happen to anybody in the world. If we allow this to happen, then anybody can be crushed.”
