Volvo has begun to integrate Pedestrian Detection and the Full Auto Brake safety system into its cars starting with the Volvo XC60. As of November, 2010, all new Volvo XC60 cars will include these safety technologies, and Ft. Volvo developed their Pedestrian Detection system as a response to the high number of pedestrian deaths in traffic accidents. In the United States, 11 percent of all traffic accident-related deaths are pedestrians. The Pedestrian Detection system uses cameras and radar sensors to detect pedestrians in front of vehicles. If the technology senses a pedestrian in front of the vehicle, the driver is alerted with a signal. If the driver does not steer the car away from the pedestrian or brake in time, the Full Auto Brake system will automatically engage the brakes to avoid a collision. The Full Auto Brake system is able to successfully brake at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour.
