FORT WORTH, Texas – Great Texas Line Press, a socially conscious boutique publisher, reports that sales climbed 14 percent in the first six months of 2010, compared to the same period the previous year, despite the down economy.
In recent weeks, Great Texas has released three original books – Texas Landmark Saloons, Honky Tonks and Dance Halls by Shirley Y. Jinkins, Texas 107 Best Walks by Allan Kimball and Texas Church Supper and Family Reunion Cookbook by Dona Murphy (of McKinney) and Dolores Runyon (of Dallas). All three are value-priced at $5.95.

http://www.greattexasline.com The strong sales are attributed to recession-proof pricing of the pocket-sized (4.25"X5.5") travel guides and cookbooks. Since its start 10 years ago, Great Texas has avoided raising the $5.95 cover price for most of its titles by identifying cost savings in production without printing overseas.
Unlike other publishers that reduced printing costs by going to China, Great Texas Line’s books are printed in the United States. All but one are printed and bound in North Texas by small companies. Pressman of White Settlement and NationWide Disc of Richland Hills produce the four-color covers and family-run Hanson Printing of Fort Worth prints the inside pages and handles the binding.
In recent years, Great Texas has striven to engage free-lance authors, photographers, designers and copy editors who have been forced to leave mainstream journalism because of the newspaper industry's drastic downsizing.
A portion of proceeds from several titles are donated to benefit charities, including Habitat for Humanity, the Big Bend Educational Foundation and the North Fort Historical Society. In addition, it has donated hundreds of books to National Public Radio stations around Texas and Louisiana for fund-raising drives. The latest book, Texas Landmark Saloons, Honky Tonks and Dance Halls, benefits Texas Dance Hall Preservation, an Austin-based non-profit.
Its first titles, including Cordon Bubba Texas Cuisine and Speak Texan in 30 Minutes or Less, have gone through more than 15 printings. They are still sold in airport shops, book stores like Barnes & Noble, gift shops like the Dallas-based Texas Treasures chain, state and national parks, as well as historic sites, including the Alamo – more than 300 outlets statewide. The press also operates an e-commerce site, www.greattexasline.com. In addition, it publishes the country’s most comprehensive book of beer reviews, The Beer Guide, which covers 2,700 foreign and domestic ales and lagers.
Bulk sales outlets include Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Partners Book Distributing, Forest Sales, Gifting Marketing Inc (Fort Worth) and directly from the publisher.
