Forum Addresses The Impact Of The Declining Number Of Teachers Of Color

Dr. Chance W. Lewis, Distinguished Professor & Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the Univ. of North Carolina at Charlotte, will address how declining numbers of teachers of color impacts our schools

To address what has been identified as one of the core problems with urban education, Dr. Chance W. Lewis, the Carolyn Grotnes Belk Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will be participating in a forum on the campus of Columbia University’s Teachers College to discuss how the declining number of teachers of color in the classroom impacts student performance. The discussion will be based upon data and research presented in Dr. Lewis’ book White Teachers—Diverse Classrooms. He will also be onsite to participate in a roundtable discussion concerning race and education.

The book discussion will take place on Monday, October 10th from 3pm to 5pm with the roundtable discussion immediately following from 6pm to 8pm. About Dr. Chance W. Lewis

Dr. Chance W. Lewis is the Executive Director of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Urban Research and Policy Collaborative and an Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Lewis received his B.S. and M.Ed. in Business Education and Education Administration/Supervision from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Lewis completed his doctoral studies in Educational Leadership/Teacher Education from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. Lewis has over 100 publications including 50+ refereed journal articles in some of the leading academic journals in the field of urban education and teacher education.
