Ahead of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, FOUR PAWS UK is stressing that eating meat is the main climate-killer. High consumption of meat and the resulting livestock husbandry harms our climate much more than cars and planes.
The leading study on climate change, published by the FAO, points out that animal husbandry contributes up to 18 percent of the emissions and is therefore the biggest contributor. As a reaction to the FAO study, the World Watch Institute also published a study in 2009 in order to integrate the factors which had been ignored by the FAO in 2006. According to the World Watch Institute Study, animal husbandry is actually responsible for 51 percent of climate change caused by man. Eating less meat could considerably slow global warming.
In February 2009, the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, came to the conclusion that climate change will cost us 40.000.000.000.000 (40 Trillion) US Dollars until the year 2050. About 80% (32 Trillion Dollars) wouldn´t be generated if we reduced our consumption of meat, milk and eggs. For example, to illustrate what this astronomic sum means, more than 200 million family houses costing 150,000 US Dollars each could be built - new homes for the entire population of Europe, Russia, Australia and Canada put together.
FOUR PAWS Head of Programs Franz Gratzer said “Now is the time to act and make crucial decisions that will benefit both the environment and the health of all citizens. Eating less meat is the single most effective thing people can do to reduce their carbon footprints. Of course downsizing our cars is a step in the right direction, but to make a real difference we should think about eating one less hamburger a week.
