As a further 50 General Practitioners sign up for David Cameron’s pilot scheme of the newly modernised NHS many businesses, including FPD Medical, develop growing concern over the impact it will have on their operation within the Healthcare market.
FPD Medical, a specialist pressure care sales and marketing company which has operated for over 25 years are keen to analyse the pros and cons of the reform and the impact it will have on their market category. Pressure ulcers are as common in the community as they are in hospitals, therefore with the implementation of the GP consortia it is compulsory that the new structure is fully understood and scrutinised in order for there to be no surprises.
The government have already admitted that patient care may suffer due to the fast paced nature of the reform but justify this by stating that the reform is crucial and if not now then when? However a document assessing the impact of the changes cannot counter balance negative impacts quite as well as the coalition government. The document has warned that the elderly will be particularly at risk and that the reform will have a negative impact on “frontline service delivery”, both of which are also a growing concern to FPD Medical due to the market they are targeting.
The reform will also impact on communication and at a recent conference held by the Healthcare Communications Association, Steve Oldfield, Managing Director of Sanofi-Aventis and Chair of ABPI’s external communication group, suggested that there would be five key challenges in communicating to the modernised healthcare industry. These challenges are early recognition of generic of products; cost pressures; changing customer interactions, harder to get products to the market; and complex stakeholder mix.
Undoubtedly the reform is the biggest shake up of the NHS in its history, with a series of major changes to be implemented by 2013. In terms of what impact this will have in regards to the fight against pressure ulcers the future doesn't look quite so bright. To summarise it is stated that the reform will negatively impact frontline nurses, patient care and increase risks for elderly patients - all of which are key segments in combating pressure ulcers.
Fortunately there is light at the end of the tunnel for FPD Medical and Aderma® as products that are proven in use and cost effective are likely to be implemented and used above brands that are recognised due to their eminent nature. To conclude if this is the case hopefully the outcome of the reform will improve patient safety and see a vast reduction in the 412,000 avoidable pressure ulcers in the UK annually which we must not forget is taking 4% of the NHS budget.
