PHILADELPHIA, PA ---The statistics are startling. Approximately 800,000 children are reported missing annually. This number includes children who are victims of stranger abductions and non-custodial parent abductions, as well as runaways. Furthermore, almost 60% of at-risk older adults suffering from dementia-related disorders wander from their homes and are reported missing each year. The McKeown Foundation and Penn Memory Center encourage parents and caregivers to be safe by participating in a free biometric fingerprinting event on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Chapman Auto Group in Northeast Philadelphia. The all-day event runs from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and will feature a Moon Bounce, balloons, face painting and popcorn.

Why Biometrics?

Biometrics, endorsed by John Walsh, noted spokesman for fighting crime and recovering missing children, is the newest and most advanced technology available today for obtaining fingerprints. Used by the FBI, the Department of Justice, law enforcement and the U.S. military. Biometrics puts a loved one’s fingerprints in the proper FBI-Certified Format so if a child or older adult are reported missing, the fingerprints can be submitted into the FBI National Crime Information Database, making the prints available immediately to all law enforcement agencies in the U.S. Time is critical factor in the recovery of a missing person.

It’s Important to be Prepared

Parents and caregivers who attend this event will receive:

1. An FBI-certified biometric 10-digit fingerprint profile;
2. A high-resolution full-color digital photograph of their child or older adult;
3 .A Safety Journal, which will provide law enforcement officials with all the necessary vital information and other important facts required of a missing person;
4. A home DNA Identification Kit that is easy to use.

Parents and caregivers leave the event with a Safety Journal (which contains the biometric fingerprints and digital photo) and a home DNA Kit with detailed use instructions. The only record of the visit is handed to you to take home. No information is kept on file.

Why Attend?

If a child goes missing, parents greatly increase their chances of quickly recovering their child if they immediately provide an FBI-certified biometric 10-digit fingerprint profile, a DNA sample, a high-resolution full-color photograph, and current statistical information. This event places all this information in the hands of the parent and caregiver so critical minutes are not lost.
