WASHINGTON, D.C. – Nancy Sutley, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality and President Obama’s principal environmental advisor, will join officials from the U.S. Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the L.A. Conservation Corps and Southern California Edison to announce a new conservation jobs program for youth this Friday, December 16, 2011 in Rio de Los Angeles State Park. The program, part of a new collaboration between the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, the US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and private sector partners across the country, will provide grants to organizations that are creating innovative conservation job opportunities for youth. This public-private partnership, part of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative, will focus especially on linking minority youth and youth living in urban areas with career opportunities in outdoor conservation. Three pilot grants, including one in Los Angeles, will be announced at the event.
The LA Conservation Corps is the largest non-profit youth corps in the nation. Founded in 1986, its primary mission is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education, and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and projects that benefit the community.
