The first story of the series, The Puzzling Mirror, was a runner up in the recent nationwide WOW competition organized by Waterstones Booksellers to promote children’s literature.
Africa is always in the headlines, often for the worst of reasons.
Here are books for children that show the positive side of everyday life in beautiful rural Uganda, and portray people living and working there, largely undisturbed by politicians and soldiers.
Full of adventure and excitement that lead the child heroes and their extraordinary pets to some very strange and different places, the stories also invite readers to address some of the issues of our times, such as pollution, global warming and the destruction of the life of the seas.
The Puzzling Mirror tells the story of a desperate struggle to regain control over DNA that is set to destroy the world.
The Searching Stone explores the relationship between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom.
The Living Axe addresses many of the big issues of our times such as desertification and melting ice caps.
‘It is my intention,’ declares Frances, ‘that my books be a mixture of education and adventure, of imagination and reality, and that the readers, while being entertained, should also learn and think.’
All three of the book covers were designed by children of the local secondary school in the town where Frances lives, making them very bright and attractive to the target audience.
These books make a truly enthralling read. Although aimed at children, reminiscent as they are of Philip Pullman’s Dark Materials Trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia by C S Lewis, there is something in them for everyone.
The first book has received great praise from the children and adults who have already read it.
