FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 24, 2011 --

The brief trailer and a discussion/slide presentation of the making of this educational documentary film about Wally McGuire’s method of introducing the creative process to audiences of all ages will be screened at the Downing Film Center on Monday, November 6 at 12:00 and 1:15 PM. Filmed at Storm King Art Center (Orange County’s 500-acre outdoor sculpture museum of international acclaim), artist/art educator Wally McGuire begins a tour with the essence of a work of art- by engaging the imaginations of its viewers. Each screening will be followed by a brief discussion led by Wally and executive producer, Sandy Kay. Reservations are recommended. Refreshments will be available from 12:30 – 1:00 on the first floor of the Yellow Bird Building.

Wally turns on an interest in art – a switch that is difficult to flip. The focus of this method is on helping others to make that primal connection of experiencing a work of art. By beginning with personal meaning Wally initiates eager or hesitant adults and children to the power of the critical and creative thinking skills requisite to abstract ideas in visual form. The energy and joy shared in a safe journey of discovery leaves a lasting impression and a model for future imaginative experiences. Wally calls it ‘Making a heart connection with art’ and describes the method as “Helping the viewer by giving them a direction of inquiry in the search for clues that helps them to make a personal connection with art, whether it be abstract or realistic or somewhere in between.” This strategy provides an entry for the viewers to become active participants in the conversation about the creative process that the artist began.

Sandy Kay points out that all creative thinking requires engagement of the heart and mind. After several decades of hearing & seeing how life changing this experience is for all ages, she focused on the great range of significance these techniques have in developing all creative thought. In fact, upon viewing the trailer, a retired special service member and current inventor identified the skills developed with this method as essential skills for success in those former military assignments! With a call for a return to developing critical and creative thinking skills in our students, this teaching tool belongs in classrooms and living rooms everywhere.

Admission for this event is $10 (more is always welcome). Proceeds will go toward the editing costs of the film. For more information and reservations, telephone the Downing at (845) 561-3686 / (800) 974-8592 or visit the web site at www.downingfilmcenter.com
