Future Facilities Joins In With Facebook’s Open Compute Project

November 7, 2011

Future Facilities' powerful visualisation toolset will facilitate the sharing of data center innovation and ideas by the Facebook Open Compute Project community.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 7, 2011 -- London, United Kingdom - Future Facilities, a leading provider of data center design and operational management software, has announced its participation in Facebook's Open Compute Project (OCP) - an industry-wide initiative to share specifications and best practices aimed at creating the most energy efficient and economical data centers.

“Facebook’s Open Compute Project is a revolutionary step towards unifying the entire data center supply chain.” said Hassan Moezzi, CEO Future Facilities. “However, the success of this effort will not only rely on industry-wide acceptance of OCP principles, but also on the availability of a toolset that can visually communicate with all data center stakeholders.”

Accordingly, Future Facilities has donated its 6SigmaOpenViewer software for use by members of the OCP. 6SigmaOpenViewer software provides a common language for inspecting and evaluating designs and ideas generated by the community. As such, it will also help the Open Compute community to overcome the traditional barriers to communication sometimes faced by the wider data center industry.

The 3D toolset which has been made available by Future Facilities allows thermal and mechanical data center information to be viewed at server, rack and facility level. Full functionality to investigate the infrastructure is also available to participants at no cost and with no licensing requirements. 6SigmaOpenViewer software can be viewed online on the “Specs & Designs” page of the Open Compute website.

"Future Facilities is excited to participate in this important project," said Hassan Moezzi. "Facebook's Open Compute Project serves a very important need that will help establish benchmarks and reduce costs for the data center industry."

Facebook has made the specifications and mechanical designs for the hardware used in its Pineville data center available via http://opencompute.org, including components such as motherboards, power supply, server chassis, server rack, and battery cabinets. In addition, Facebook has shared the electrical and mechanical specifications of the data center which have contributed to an initial power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.07.

Facebook Thermal Engineer, Veerendra Mulay will be discussing the Open Compute standard for data center and server design, and its significance for the data center industry at Future Facilities' 6SigmaDC Conference in San Francisco, on November 15th.
