Family vacations are not what they used to be. With cell phone chatting and texting, digital photo snapping, iPod listening and handheld game playing, it’s difficult to make group memories. Take a trip to Asbury Park, however, and you will find you and your family transported to a long ago era at the newly-relocated Silverball Museum Pinball Hall of Fame.
A museum and arcade in one, Silverball has on display and ready to play 200 pinball machines –from the 1930s to the present - in a 5,000 square foot space on the boardwalk. Visitors of all ages, from elementary students to retirees, are discovering and rediscovering the lure of flashing lights, exciting sounds and addictive challenges only old school pinball machines can provide.
Arcade founder and pinball machine collector Rob Ilvento recently moved and expanded Silverball from a much smaller space in a store basement in downtown Asbury Park. He claims his passion for pinball machines is paying off not only in dollars, but in countless stories of nostalgia from grateful visitors and the sheer joy of players young and old. He is also proud to be contributing to the revival of Asbury Park, once one of the country’s favorite family vacation destinations.
A flat fee to enter Silverball Museum – $10 dollars for an hour or $20 for the entire day – covers free play on all machines. There’s no need to carry quarters, and you may even get an education along the way from the many signs providing pinball history.
Many wander in to play alone, but Silverball is also popular for birthday parties, reunions, school and club trips and fundraisers. In addition to hosting fundraising events, Ilvento offers Silverball gift cards as fundraising tools, allowing non-profit groups to purchase them at 50% of face value.
To further enhance the already nostalgic arcade atmosphere, Silverball Museum Pinball Hall of Fame regularly features Elvis and Sinatra impersonators. Word has it that the local rock ‘n roll community has recently discovered the unique hangout, too.
Silverball Museum Pinball Hall of Fame is located at 1000 Ocean Avenue, and summer hours are Sunday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 a.m. To learn more, visit www.silverballmuseum.com.
