More than 600 Southampton children will lead a parade through the city, as part of a tribute to the hundreds of residents who died on board the Titanic. The parade is part of a centenary commemoration of the disaster. The local children will hold placards bearing the pictures of those who served as crew and lost their lives when the ship went down. “Southampton was the home of the Titanic,” said a source from Gateway Hampshire, “It’s fitting that we pay tribute to that.”
The children will lead the tribute as part of the opening ceremony for the city’s SeaCity museum, an attraction dedicated to the disaster. Led by Southampton’s Youth Brass Band, the parade will begin from the Engineers memorial, along Above Bar, and then along Commercial Road, towards the new museum in Havelock Road. The parade beings at noon on the 10th April, exactly 100 years from when the Titanic left the city.
“The impact of the Titanic disaster was felt around the world,” said our Gateway Hampshire source, “but especially in Southampton where most of the crew came from. It’s a big part of our history as a city.”
The young people, from more than 27 schools across the city, have been researching the crew members for several months, and the information they have gathered will be written on the back of each placard they carry.
Out of the 897 crew members on the Titanic, 714 were from Southampton, and 538 of those lost their lives in the disaster. Organisers of the parade are appealing for descendents of victims to take part in the event.
John Hannides, cabinet member for Resources, Leisure and Culture said, “This will be a truly fitting tribute to all those crew members who lost their lives on the Titanic.”
Our Gateway Hampshire source added, “The people of Southampton are really rallying together on this day to commemorate a landmark anniversary of an extremely important event in the city’s history. It just shows that the Titanic disaster still speaks to people to this day.”
Gateway Hampshire is a Southampton-based sales and marketing company, who work with major nationwide clients across entertainment industries, charitable organisations, telephone communications and also into the construction industry.
