The Trans-gender world will soon welcome a wonderful new e-book addressing the issue of gender identity, transitioning and reassignment surgery. The world of those who are afflicted with gender identity is a mysterious one full of little used terms. This can lead to misunderstanding and the very first thing this new e-book does is cut through all of that by clearly defining the different terminologies such as 'gender identity, gender dysphoria, trans-sexual and so on.
A child's gender can be influenced by hormonal factors in the womb and the book takes a look at how the development of the brain in pregnancy can influence gender. The growing notion that our gender is mainly influenced by hormonal factors in the womb casts a pall over scientific hypothesis along the nature vs nurture lines.
The fundamental factor which affects gender development in early pregnancy has now been shown to be the levels of hormones such as testosterone, estrogens and androgens which a fetus is exposed to in early pregnancy.
In a quantity of cases in the early 1970's, gender development is believed to have been significantly affected by exposure of the mother to a controversial drug known as Deithylstilbestrol (DES)
One of the results was the birth of the occasional child which was born with 'uncharacterized genitalia' and the pressure this placed on parents and medical people alike, as there was a desire to accurately fill out a birth certificate and of primary importance was to label the child, a 'girl' or a 'boy'.
Acting on the advice of specialists parents regularly made the choice for their infant so that rather than grow up with uncharacterized genitalia there would be clarity of gender. The hope of course was that because a decision had been made early in life, none of this would be remembered by the infant. Many people who had this determination as to their gender identity and sexuality made for them have later shown great dissatisfaction with their genitalia.
Those who were affected by the drug in particular have often had no choice but to live with the decision made for them by their parents. There is much more packed into this wonderful e-book which will be an immensely valuable resource for those in the trans world. Keep a watch out for the writer's blogs on this subject
