Genesis NRG in productive Niobrara area

The Niobrara has been producing oil and gas for several years, but recent advancements in fracture drilling are turning areas of the field into major unconventional sources of shale oil. There are currently 100 active wells and another 400 staked locations. (1) Success has been found lately by converting efforts from fracturing to matrix, resulting in higher recoveries than were originally estimated. The Denver Jules basin is also receiving quite a bit of interest lately with major companies buying large plots of land. The Wattenberg Field of Niobrara has shown potential for horizontal drilling success in area that previously saw vertical-only action. The core produces 40 percent to 60 percent liquids, while its extended area produces 60 percent to 80 percent.

The Chesapeake area is another large field of exploration in the Niobrara, with some parts in the Denver-Jules Basin and others extending into the Powder River Basin. It has an estimated recovery of 1.3 million barrels of oil per well. It already has six wells drilled and two wells fracced in the D-J Basin area. With such promising resource availability, the Niobrara area is fast becoming a hot spot for oil and gas exploration. Its price per acre is increasing rapidly and it has been compared to the successful Bakken field. It is thermally mature with modest clay content bounded by shale seals. In addition, its resources are in position to be removed with good margins. (2)
