When their island home was so suddenly gone, the few who survived found they had no foreign friends to turn to. Every shore they came to for shelter was a shore they had previously attacked and raided, and were now very, very unwelcome on.

And that's why the marriage of William and Kate is as much about keeping secrets as it is about careful breeding. In the signs and symbols all around them, there are very real and important connections to the traditions of that island and its few survivors.

By whatever name it's called, or whatever mythic or religious symbolism it becomes shrouded in, their shared family heritage means that, despite it unsavory ring, they are closely related to each other and to a succession of con-artist kings willing to murder for land.

Furthermore, they are closely linked to many secrets of just how related the world's rulers, celebrities, and cultural figures are, because, unlike any other family on Earth, this one had a motivation to go beyond the chores of daily survival and revive a traumatically lost kingdom.

As they were now so afraid of the all-too-real possibility of losing everything again, in time they developed a set of "cousin tribes" with different clothes, languages, and even looks, to spread themselves around the planet and conspire to control all possible resources.

By doing this without arousing suspicions that they were trying to take over, they have put themselves in a position of guaranteeing that if any humans survive, they will. If any tragedy wipes out one arm of the family, the others will still be safe. But they must lie and lie and lie.
