Pre-conception genetic testing and counseling is a cost effective procedure for couples to determine whether or not their child will be at risk for inheriting a recessive genetic disease. While currently only offered to couples whose family history or ethnicity may suggest a high risk, the test is gaining international approval with a recent nod from the United Kingdom’s Human Genetics Commission. The HGC affirms that genetic testing is an ethical, legal and socially acceptable alternative for any interested couple.
Pre-conception genetic testing and counseling is advantageous and can eliminate the difficult decision about whether or not to proceed with an at risk pregnancy. Genetic testing screens DNA to determine whether one or both parents carry a single copy of mutant genes that cause recessive disorders in offspring. A single mutant gene is silent in individual parents, yet when combined, can cause serious genetic diseases. Two carriers who each carry a mutant gene have a 1 in 4 chance of giving birth to a child with life threatening inherited conditions such as cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell disease.
Pre-conception testing and counseling removes uncertainty. In cases where risks of recessive genetic disease are indicated, couples can try and conceive using IVF and embryo screening. This procedure is a wonderful method to ensure healthy children. The mother’s egg is fertilized by the father’s sperm in a laboratory. Embryonic cells are then tested individually and only healthy embryos are implanted into the womb.
Increase your chances for a healthy baby. With its improved technology, cost effectiveness and ethical approach, genetic testing and counseling will become a popular and routine part of family planning.
