(Free-Press-Release.com) November 26, 2009 --
(Bremen) The 'Deutsche Seemannsmission (DSM)' expresses its condolences with the family of a seafarer who died in a pirate attack. The pirate attack took place off the coast of Benin in West Africa.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the seafarer who died in the attack and with the crew of the CANCALE Star who have suffered this ordeal. Hopefully all the crew may be able to return home to their families as soon as possible," said Heike Proske, the General Secretary of the DSM in Bremen.
Besides the medical care required for the physical recovery of survivors, the DSM stressed the need for psychological aftercare. It is at the point of providing emergency counselling and to facilitate access to psychological care that the DSM's programme of action, "Piracy: Threat at Sea" (Piraten: Bedrohung auf See, www.bedrohung-auf-see.de) comes into play.
Proske demands: "The experience does not end with the flight of the pirates. The lives of those affected will never be the same as before November the 24th. The aftermath of the experience has to be addressed by those who have a duty of care." Ongoing care should be provided in the seafarers' countries of origin.
