Today at a Press Conference held at Press Club Dr. V.K.Bhartia - Director IMIS & Consultant General Surgery AMRI Kolkata said this to the media people. Addressing to the Press he told that “Get admitted in Morning ,get your hernia operated and next morning you are ready to go home. The operation is done through a key hole –better known as Laparoscopic Surgery.

Gone are the days when you had to stay in hospital for a week and be out of work for a fortnight or so. Then there were severe restrictions placed on you like not sitting on floor or lifting a child. Now days with the help of laparoscope a large mesh is placed at the defect and sutured with special stapling devices. You can go home within 24hrs of the operation and go back to work within three days. Besides there are no restrictions. You are allowed to get back to your normal activity within few days.”

Today we all know that time is very important in our live and we don’t want to waste that so this new technique of operation and using of newer lighter mess has made the operation and time of cure very fast and with 100% success rate . In western countries a person comes driving his car, gets operated and goes back driving his car.”

He also added “Hernia can occur at any age. Older people are more prone to strangulation. Even in very old people this surgery can be done safely. Of course a laparoscopic surgery costs more since you have to take account of imported materials like mesh and fixation devices. However since this procedure allows you to return to work quickly, it is cheaper in the long run.”

About Hernia:

Hernia is a protrusion of your intestine through a defect in the abdominal wall. This bulge under the skin can cause lot of pain and discomfort. Sometimes the intestines in hernia can get twisted (strangulated) needing emergency surgery.

It can be present since birth or can develop afterwards due to surgery, pregnancy, respiratory problems or violent coughing and straining. There are different types of hernia. However basically you have a groin hernia which occurs mostly in men. You have abdominal wall hernia called ventral hernia which occurs mostly in women.

All hernias need repair. This involves applying a synthetic mesh at the defect and stitching it. Most of the hernia is done by open method. The newer technique is through Key Hole Surgery (laparoscope). This is similar to gall stones removal through key hole. Any surgery causes pain which is why most of us shy away from the operation. However with newer light weight mesh the operation has become almost painless. Besides there is virtually no chance of hernia occurring again.
