This year during Arts and Culture Day, Class 19 met at the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford. The day was only beginning after a tasty breakfast and performance by the Seminole High School String Ensemble. The class then toured the zoo, and boarded the bus to visit various art and cultural sites around Sanford including: the Art House, Seminole State College Planetarium, Sanford Historic Walking Tour, the Sanford Museum, a visit to an art Gallery and wrapped up the day by prescreening the musical production The King and I” at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center. After a fun filled day exploring the arts, class participants gained a new appreciation and understanding of the need for partnerships and funding for the arts in Seminole County.
Arts and Culture day is just one example of the specialized areas the leadership program exposes participants to. Through the Seminole Leadership curriculum the class gains awareness and gets connected to many organizations within the community. Each class is committed to creating a legacy in Seminole County, and these connections made in the community become a crucial key to their success. Last year’s leadership class installed a $20,000 security alarm for the Sharing Center, a non- profit organization working to prevent homelessness for low-income families in Seminole County. In addition to the alarm the class also, logged more than 800 volunteer hours, raised more than $7500 and collected enough food to feed 75 families for a week.
Power Grid Engineering’s company President Michael Wright, and Vice President Andre Uribe were participants in last year’s class. The two were so inspired by what they were able to accomplish with Leadership Seminole that they have plans to sponsor an employee to take part in the program every year. This year they have chosen their Vice President of Operations Glenn Durie. Durie has found the Seminole Leadership experience to be equally inspiring. His class has committed to building a playground and refurbishing an indoor play center for The Rescue Mission in Sanford. The Rescue Mission is Sanford’s only emergency shelter providing food, clothing and shelter to more than 100 people at any given time, nearly half of which are children.
